How To Guide - 6 Ways to Tell your Story

How many times have you heard that telling your story is a great way to grow an engaged audience for your micro business? But how many times has this made you feel overwhelmed, shy or downright resistant to telling anyone anything?

However, we do need to connect with our audiences in the absence of huge marketing budgets and there are ways to share our behind the scenes and stories that are manageable and don't require you to reveal your inner most secrets and vulnerabilities.

So, if you're less than enthusiastic about being seen or heard or fear that sharing your story is going to leave you feeling exposed, here are some great ways to get the message out that will feel less stressful.

  1. Start with your 'about me' page. Practice being more you and more open on this page. Think less about a timeline and maybe add a little more about why you took the next steps. For example, swap out 'I started my business after I had my first child' to something with a little more of 'you' in it, for example, 'After the birth of my first baby, I realised that the urge to strike out on my own was stronger than my fear of taing the leap'.

  2. Make a list of yes and nos. Sometimes, the worst part of sharing your story is about not being sure what to share and what not to. How about making a list of things you don't mind people knowing and a list of things that are off limits? This way you've made a little contract with yourself, you've created boundaries but also a lit of topics and areas that you can develop and get creative with.

  3. Share some fun facts. Using text posts or text over a reel, share a few fun facts about yourself e.g why you started your business, your favourite part of running a business or maybe your favourite food/pet/view/sport etc. This shares a bit about your story without a full history!

  4. Create a weekly update. Developing a series (YouTube, reels, etc) about how the business is doing is a great way to share progress and help people to get involved. You could share top ten selling products, top tip of the week, life behind the scenes, what the business's dog is up to, how you're training is going etc.

  5. Embrace video. It doesn't need to necessarily be with your face in it but perhaps some voice over your processes, life in your office or place or even just text over your beautiful images, turned into a reel to share what you do or how your business is developing.

  6. Practice. It takes a little while to find your groove when you're sharing your story or stories. Think behind the scenes, progress reports or a little insight into your thinking or learning but not all in one go. Take regular steps in your content planning to try out what feels comofrtable and waht engages. If you post something you later hate, simpy delete and move on.
