12 Days – day 10 Homemade Mulled Wine

There is something deeply ancient and comforting about mulled wine in the winter. The spiced aromas, deep, deep colour and sweet alcohol hit. You may have only experienced the pre bottles variety or sampled at the Christmas markets, but homemade is best. You can tweak the recipe to suit and until you have a new family favourite to pass down the generations.

Here is our favourite at Simply HQ to get you started….

2 bottles of good red wine
1 orange studded with cloves (10-12)
5cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled
1 cinnamon stick
a glug of brandy to taste (or rum if you prefer)
125g of brown sugar (again to taste)
Juice of an orange
3 whole star anise (optional)
slices of orange or clementine

Add all the ingredients together in a large pan and over a low to medium heat, bring almost to the boil and stir until the sugar is dissolved. For a perfect infusion of tastes, allow to simmer for 30 minutes and serve.
